課程概述

This class will provide a general introduction of academic research. The ultimate goal of this class is to increase communication ability—both in speaking and writing, but the specific focus (with regard to coursework) will be on formal style and research writing. Students will be expected to actively participate in their own learning process, to find ideas of interest, to develop clear, well-supported arguments, and to both search for and present (in-writing) facts and data to support their position. Students will also be expected to share and discuss their ideas with their classmates, and work closely with their group members in the peer-review process.

Although the class goals are universal to any language, this class will be conducted entirely in English, and students will be given ample opportunity each week to practice and improve their speaking and listening skills. The majority of class time will be devoted to student presentations and idea sharing. Homework will consist mostly of reading academic articles, with short review activities held at the beginning of the next class. Readings have been specifically chosen by your instructor to encourage class discussion and lead into writing assignments. There will be no exams in this course.

課程目標
The general goal of this course is for students to become more self-directed in their learning and to establish a more student-centered class context. The specific goal is to produce one academic researched argument essay that: is well-structured (with clear introduction/body A, B, C,/conclusion); is well supported with summarized and quoted (APA/MLA) source material and citations; and has a clear argument thesis statement. Students will be able to identify and write topic sentences, as well as use appropriate conjunctive adverbs and punctuation (semicolon/colon/dash).
課程要求
Grades will be calculated on a 1000-point scale: 250 points for your final researched argument essay with sources; 150 points for your midterm outline essay (this will basically be a first draft of your final researched argument essay without sources—all stages of the writing process will be part of this score); 150 points for short essay writing (summary, critique, quotation, and synthesis reviews); 100 points for an argument presentation (you will present an opinion thesis to the class along with supporting points for the class to respond to and critique); 150 points for class participation and attendance (in-class discussion and opinion sharing will be greater emphasized this semester); 100 points for one group media-listening presentation (present roughly 15 minutes of news media from CNN, BBC, New York Times, You-Tube, etc… and be responsible for a subsequent 15-25 minute discussion/question/answer session (it is ok to use an interview or TV show/movie clip IF it relates to a greater, unified issue); 100 points for on-line work and peer review (we will still use our class Facebook page and Ceiba, to post reading responses and to comment on the work and ideas of other classmates).
